OFF TRACK

What’s happening {{first_name}}!
Welcome to the premiere issue of Off Track, I’m writing to you from the jungles of Colombia in search of The Lost City, so far I’ve only found heart attack inducing climbs, blistering heat and a bunch of mosquitos who think I’m there personal buffet.
This week, we explore my first high altitude hike, my dreams of cliff suspended ladder climbs, and a look back on that time I … well you’ll see. As well as future adventure plans and some gear tips for your future trips.
So lets crack on…

Carrying a trekking pole I didn’t even use … what a lemon.
Explorers Hack
This week’s hack always pack a neck snood!
It has saved me from dusty roads when biking, kept me warm on night treks and even worked as an eye mask on long ferry, or bus journeys and if you run out of money it helps hide your face from security cameras 😉.
The amount of use I’ve got for different applications from this one small piece of material is mental, and it literally takes up no space.
One tiny item - multiple uses!

Stairway to Heaven in Austria
How’s your fear of heights?
This one has been on my bucket list for a while. After seeing a YouTube video from 2 of the biggest travel creators (Kara & Nate) a couple of years ago I've dreamt about it ever since. (I know weird thing to dream about but I’m weird deal with it).
This adrenaline adventure is tucked away in the Austrian Alps, and accessed by a thrilling via ferrata that takes you climbing for several hours. You will reach a 40m (131ft) long sky ladder hovering 700m (2296ft) above the ground nestled between two towering rock faces, and from there it’s a heart pounding ascent up the steep cliff to the summit to reach the breathtaking views.
I’m getting excited just writing about it.
Flashback Fumble
Picture this… I’m travelling Cambodia and a week in I arrive to one of the beautiful islands known as Koh Rong Sanloem, a truly picturesque scene off the coast of the mainland. A peaceful vibe with its stunning beaches and everything laid out along the front main beach making it easy to navigate.
Well, I arrived by boat on this beach barefoot with my shoes tied to my bag (I am on the beach after all) and realised the hotel I’ve booked is on the opposite end to where we’ve landed, but it doesn’t look too far, “I’ll start to walk it no problem". So I set off with my 16kg bag on my back and my 10kg bag attached to to my front pressing my feet down step my step into the grains of sand. My feet start to feel sore but it can’t be that much further… can it?
Well I walk for 30 minutes down this beach under the weight of my bags refusing to stop and put on my shoes, only to arrive at the other end confronted by a stretch of jungle. I stop and sit down in another beach hotel to check out my feet, bleeding and blistered already and realise with the help of an English lad working there the hotel i’ve booked is round the other side of the jungle and the only way to get there is by boat, which I hadn’t organised.
The owner of this other hotel says he can try later to take me in his boat but he doesn’t think he will be able to land due to the waves and the rocks so ill have to get out and potentially swim a little depending on the tide, but at the very least I’ll have to wade through the water.
Safe to say I sacrificed the booking scrapped it off and checked into a room at this hotel instead… defo learnt to research a little more after that 😆.

On the Horizon

Bartolome Island in the Galapagos
Yes that’s right I’m heading off to one of the most unique places on this planet, to witness the volcanic landscapes, endemic wildlife and thrilling adventures hosted upon the mighty Galápagos Islands.
I have so much planned in terms of adventure, tours and things I want to see as well as multiple islands I want to try to visit but honestly the thing I’m most excited about is the wildlife, it is ment to be insane! Sea lions roaming the streets and beaches, marine iguanas, colourful and giant birds, sharks, manta rays and so much more that I have probably never even heard of let alone seen.
I can’t wait to show you all how special these islands are and some of the amazing wildlife that resides here.
(Cut to in a couple of weeks you’ll see me being chased down by sea lions 😂)
Off the Clock
This week I finally got round to watching a series I’ve been waiting to come out for a while after watching the first series a few years back. I remember finishing it and instantly checking they would be making another and although it was confirmed it’s been a long, long time waiting (3 years! I’m nearly a pensioner!).
The series in question… Limitless with Chris Hemsworth. Diving into the science behind the body and mind whilst taking on incredible challenges and adventures across the globe, accompanied by world renowned experts in their field. Literally you couldn’t have made a better series that packs all my interests into one… it’s epic.
I highly, highly recommend you check it out it’s a National Geographic original on Disney+ and if you haven’t seen the first series make sure you check that out as well.

Trail Tested

Before my trip to South America begun I actually bought my first pair of hiking boots ever! Yep an adventure traveller who has never owned hiking boots. I only stated I love adventure trips I never said I was any good at it all…
So the boots I purchased I broke in on a multi day trek and had no issues. Since then I have climbed a few mountains and volcanoes with them and they are the Salomon X Ultra 5 Mid Gore-Tex. One of the top brands in the world and I love them! I have had running shoes and trail running shoes from them in the past and they have never failed me.
The thing I love the most is you can answer questions on their website in order to find the perfect shoe for what you need. For example, I needed hiking boots good for multi day treks, long durations but would be good in mixed terrains from wet jungles, volcanic ash to snowy mountains, and safe to say they are one of my favourite purchases of adventure gear to date!
Words for the Road…

I’d love to hear from you.
